Partners for Active Living seeks to make Spartanburg County, South Carolina a healthy, more livable community by promoting walking, bicycling, and physical activity as a part of everyday life.

Recent successes which will impact the health of the Spartanburg community include:

1. Assisted Spartanburg County school to secure federal Safe Routes to School grants.

2. Led the City of Spartanburg's effort to become a Bicycle Friendly Community, which was realized in 2007.

3. Launched a significant initiative to reduce childhood obesity rates in Spartanburg County through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities program.

4. Realized numerous policy and infrastructure changes which impact active living opportunities in our community.

5. Loaned 158 bicycles in 2010, which means more bicycles on the road and more physical activity taking place.

6. Advocated the adoption of the Spartanburg County Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan by Spartanburg County and City Councils, as well as Spartanburg Area Transportation Study Policy Committee.

7. Supported and encouraged more than 20 miles of bicycle lane installation.

8. Coordinated 170 bicycle rack installations at local businesses.

9. Offered scholarships to 40% of Girls on the Run participants.

10. Offered 67 community bicycle rides and walks in 2010.

11. Launched a Mobile Farmers' Market & Hub Cycle system in partnership with Hub City Farmers' Market in order to increase access to healthy food and physical activity.

12. Assisted Pine Street Elementary and Houston Elementary Schools in implementing a "Walking and Wheeling Wednesday" program, which got hunderds of children and their families walking and bicycling to school. Houston Elementary was mentioned on the Let's Move campaign blog.

13. Hosted the Spartanburg Regional Classis Criterium with Spring Fling to show that Spartanburg supports bicycling at all levels.

14. Planned South Carolina's first Sunday Streets event, modeled after successful events throughout the country and world.

15. Continued to serve as an important voice for preventative health in circles that typically do not account for health.
