Spartanburg’s Bike to School Day is a program that helps schools and students get involved with National Bike Month! Partners for Active Living, in conjunction with schools throughout Spartanburg County, sponsors Bike to School Day.
The event is similar to International Walk to School Day and is designed to support physical activity and more environmentally friendly transportation among elementary school children in a safe, group setting! In addition, the event supports the City’s goal of mainting the designation as a bicycle-friendly community.
In past years, schools involved have included Pine Street Elementary, Houston Elementary, Jesse Boyd Elementary and Spartanburg Day School. In past years accommodations have been made for those who cannot easily bike from their homes or live to far away. Community meeting places have been used as well as making use of the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail.
Safety is a top priority of this event. All children are required to wear helmets. In addition, children in grades K-2 are required to have a parent join them on their trek to school. Spartanburg’s Public Safety officers have ensured safety when crossing intersections and while riders are en route.
