Borrowing Bicycles

Partners for Active Living has two programs that make bicycles available: Hub Cycle and Spartanburg BCycle

Program Hours
Mondays and Wednesdays
10:00am-12:00 pm and 2:00-4:00 pm
All rentals, returns and exchanges will happen during this time.

How does it work?
Partners for Active Living accepts donations of new or used bicycles for the program. Each donation is tax-deductible. The used bicycles are repaired to safe and ride-able condition by our lead mechanic, Randy Cooksey, who is LCI certified with years of experience. Once ready for use, the bikes are made available to the public for long-term lending.

Purpose
Hub Cycle is a program of Partners for Active Living designed to increase the availability of and access to bicycles in Spartanburg. Through this program, we hope to increase the number of people using bicycles for transportation and recreation, and the number of trips taken by bike in Spartanburg County.

What do we hope to accomplish?

  • Recycling used bicycles
  • Offering free, long-term bike lending
  • Teaching bike safety and on-road skills to beginner riders
  • Teaching bike safety, maintenance and repair to those willing to learn
  • Encouraging more people to bicycle for exercise and leisure
  • Providing a viable transportation option for those without access to a car

Borrowing a Bike

How do you borrow a bike?
The offices of Partners for Active Living are directly above the Hub Cycle shop and so our staff will be happy to help you during program hours. If you cannot come during those times, we are happy to help during our normal office hours, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. We ask, however, that you call or e-mail ahead to arrange a pick-up time so that we can ensure someone will be available. You can set-up an appointment by emailing info@active-living or by calling 864.598.9638.

Requirements
Bicycles of Hub Cycle can be borrowed for a period of up to 3 months (or 90 days) and a helmet and lock are included with each bike. A $15 deposit is required and will be returned in full when the bike is returned. To borrow a Hub Cycle bike, the borrower must be 18 years of age or older, must sign the waiver and release, must agree to wear a helmet every time they ride and must pay the deposit amount. Due to current liability limitations we cannot rent to anyone under the age of 18.

Returning a Bike
At the end of the 90 day period, the bike, lock and helmet can be returned in exchange for the deposit amount OR it can be renewed for another 3 months at no additional cost (no fee and no additional deposit).

Bike Selection
Because of the nature of the program, the selection of bikes is based on bike donations. While we will continue to work to find new donations, bike availability is not guaranteed. Our staff will make every effort to find a type and size bike that fits the interests and needs of the borrower, based on what is available.

Bike Repair
Michael DiSantos, our lead mechanic, is in the Hub Cycle Shop at various times throughout the week. Please call ahead for details.

Spartanburg BCycle is making bicycling easier in our community. Partners for Active Living has placed self-service bike rental stations (BCycle Stations) in five locations: Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail, Morgan Square, on Wofford College’s and Converse College's campuses and at Harvest Park.

Spartanburg BCycle members can pick up bikes at any BCycle Station and drop them off at any BCycle Station. That’s why we say it’s magic: a bike that’s there when you need it and gone when you don’t.

Bike sharing makes it economical and convenient to use bikes for trips that are too far to walk but too short to drive. As a member, you can use a BCycle to run an errand, grab lunch, travel from the bus stop to your office, or just get some fresh air and exercise. There are as many reasons to use a BCycle as there are members!
