Highway 9 is slated to be widened. A final design must be adopted soon so that SCDOT can move forward with the project.

The
proposed plan includes what is often referred to as a "complete
street." This means that sidewalks, grassy buffers, bicycle lanes and
planted medians with occasional turn lanes are included so that all
users are accommodated. However, there have been some who have
suggested pulling these amenities to save funding. These amenities,
however, would be the first step in creating a pedestrian and bicycle
network so that eventually community residents can walk their children
to school or ride their bicycles to a park or green space. In the
meantime, the sidewalks would encourage those that work along Highway 9 to make small lifestyle changes, like walking to lunch.
If the
amenities are removed from the plan, the project will only be extended
approximately a quarter of a mile, which is minimal. Please consider contacting your County Council representative if you live in Boiling Springs (email addresses in attached PDF)
or for those of you that are concerned citizens, a member of the SPATS
Policy Committee Member, to encourage them to support a plan with wide
sidewalks, bicycle lanes and planted medians. What Highway 9 might look like: |
