Childhood Obesity Prevention
Over the last six years, Partners for Active Living has been committed to reducing the rates of and preventing the growth of childhood obesity in Spartanburg County.
Sometimes we get asked what childhood obesity prevention has to do with active living. The answer is an easy one – generally speaking, childhood obesity is prevented through physical activity and healthy eating. We are committed to making sure that the places where children are – schools, preschools, churches, after-school activities – embrace healthy lifestyles.
As part of our commitment to improving childhood obesity rates, we have to know what those rates are. In partnership with all seven Spartanburg County school districts and SC DHEC Upstate Region, we measure the obesity rates of more than 87% of all children in Spartanburg County. We are grateful to Mary Black Foundation providing funding for scales at each school in 2013.
