For the last decade, PAL has supported walking and bicycling to school initiatives. Walking and bicycling to school are important because it helps children get extra physical activity into their day, as well as learn about pedestrian and bicycle safety, see the natural environment around them, and spend quality time with family and friends. PAL always encourages a parent or guardian to join in the walk or bicycle ride.

A Walking School Bus Program launched in March 2015 at Jesse Boyd Elementary School in District 7. In just a few weeks, the program grew from just a few children and parents to over twenty participants (including staff) and students representing every grade. Participants joined the walk along several points on the route.

There are a number of ways for schools to encourage walking and bicycling to and from school:

  1. Participate in International Walk to School Day on a Wednesday in October each year. The 2015 date was October 7, and Spartanburg County has had the highest rate of participation in the state for over a decade. A record 62 schools in Spartanburg County participated!
  2. Participating schools can apply now for the Golden Shoe Award each year; The 2015 Golden Shoe Awards have been named! Read more about our winners.
  3. Participate in South Carolina Walk to School Day
  4. Join the bicycling movement in Spartanburg and ride your bicycle to school on Bicycle to School Day . Bike to School Day 2016 is MAY 4!
