Beating the Winter Blues

December 15, 2017

Most of us tend to slow down during the winter, with shorter days and longer nights. At least I know I do. I’d much prefer to enjoy the winter months from the comfort of my own bed, actively avoiding those cold windy mornings. The shorter days and colder weather make it hard to continue those healthy habits I picked up in the spring. However, I know that physical activity over the winter is just as important as during better weather months. Poor sleep and mood, fatigue, a decrease in concentration, and joint pain are just a few of the negative effects that decreased activity during the winter can have on your health.

But when faced with the winter blues, the best way to beat it is to bundle up and move your body. So, despite my cold-weather-induced lack of motivation to get up and get moving, last Saturday I went for a run. Yes, I went for a run in the snow. Crazy, I know. Whether it’s a quick walk around the block, a run on the MBF Rail Trail, or following along to a workout video on YouTube, make it a point to combat the cold by staying active this season.

The benefits of staying active are well worth the effort and the healthy exercise habits you build this winter will keep you moving well through 2018!
