The Spartanburg chapter focuses specifically on obesity prevention and promoting changes to policies, systems, and environments that increase opportunities for healthy eating and active living for all county residents.

Tuesday afternoon, cars filled with Spartanburg residents wrapped around Mary H. Wright Elementary School to pick up boxes of produce. Volunteers dropped off boxes filled with tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, lettuce, corn and more in the back seats of cars while people yelled “thank yous” and children waved.

While many people are stuck at home during the coronavirus outbreak, Partners for Active Living is moving ahead with plans to expand its countywide trails network. PAL has asked Spartanburg County to apply for a $17.4 million federal grant to build 14 miles of new trails and two pedestrian bridges across two major highways, as part of the 32-mile Daniel Morgan Trail System.

Thirty five thousand three hundred thirty. That’s the number of people in Spartanburg County that are going hungry and do not have access to healthy food options. And that was before the coronavirus happened. Emergency food providers are organizations that provide food to under-resourced people in our communities.

Thirty-four new trees will be planted soon at Denny’s Plaza in downtown Spartanburg providing more shade and beautification of the area. The project funded by a $17,000 grant from the Noble Tree Foundation is set to begin in a few weeks. The trees will be planted around the outside border of the plaza along South Converse Street, East Main Street, East Broad Street and South Liberty Street.

Work is expected to start soon on the next phase of the Wadsworth Trail along Anderson Mill Road on Spartanburg’s west side. The two-mile segment will connect with a dozen neighborhoods near Interstate 26 to Anderson Mill Elementary School, churches, the North Tyger River and the reconstructed Anderson Mill.
